The question of what tatting tools are safe to pack on a carry-on when traveling by plane surfaces every now and then. These are the ones I've always taken with me and have had no trouble so far.
1 - Guias para picots/Picot gauges
2 - Imperdibles/Safety pins
3 - Cortador de hilo/Thread cutter
4 - Tijeras/Scissors
5 - Aguja con cabo/Mounted needle
6 - Ganchillos/Crochet hooks
(Go to this post to know how I made my hooks and needle)

However, in times of high security alerts, the only thing I take with me is this pen turned tatting tool.

My advice is:  heed airline warnings and never take with you anything of sentimental value in case it's confiscated. Remember - it all depends on an "on-the-spot" decision made by a TSA officer who might be having a bad day...
